Czech Exchange student attends meeting of local group

History, current events, language and chocolate were part of the agenda on Wednesday, Oct. 19, as the New Prague Czech Heritage Club hosted Vostrelova Zuzi, an exchange student from the Czech Republic.

Zuzi is attending classes at New Prague High School. She began her presentation at the club’s meeting with a presentation of Czech candies that had been mailed to her by her family. Included were several types of chocolates, from wafers to banana flavored. There was also honey ginger bread and pudding.

Zuzi also had a map where she pointed to her town, Usti nad Labem, the seventh most populous city of the Czech Republic. The capital of its region and district, it is located in a mountainous area of the country and is near the merging of the Bilina and Elbe rivers. Usti nad Labem is a major industrial center, is an active river port and is an important railway junction of the Czech Republic.

Zuzi and the 10 people that attended the meeting, discussed a recent change for the country, concerning its name. While the official long-form name will be the Czech Republic, Czechia will become the conventional short-form name for the nation. Zuzi said it was similar to how Great Britain is also known as England.
