Czech films showing this Sunday in NP

Our Czech Heritage Club, along with New Prague Area Community Education, welcomes area residents to come and enjoy a free showing of "Fimfárum" by Jana Wericha at the New Prague Middle School Board Room 410 Central Ave N (enter through Door One) from 2-3:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 17.

"Fimfárum" is a word that Jan Werich, a Czech actor and writer, created for his magical fairy tales for children and adults. Sunday's showing consists of five cartoons, in Czech with English subtitles, each of which is derived from a Czech folktale. These stories are wickedly clever, with their various impossible happenings, supernatural touches and engaging self-centered characters.

The stories are:

"When Leaves Fall from the Oak" tells of how a drunken peasant makes a deal with the devil and ultimately through some mischievous and inventive fun saves his soul.

"Fearless Frankie" relates how the father of a young man who is afraid of nothing arranges for his son to spend a night in a tavern where the spirits of the dead gather. Little does the father realize just what he has unleashed.

"Mean Barbara" revolves around the efforts to dispose of the body of a miserly old woman and is filled with a humorous understanding of human nature.

"A Dream Fulfilled" is about a superstitious farmer who squanders his money playing the lottery.

"Fimfárum" centers on a blacksmith with a scheming, unfaithful wife who is forced to perform a variety of impossible tasks.

People are welcome to come this Sunday for a little light and dark comedy.
