Czech Heritage Club has special guests Wednesday

The Czech Heritage Club will host a gathering at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, to hear Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic Marit Lee Kucera, accompanied by Joan Sedlacek of St. Paul, to talk about Czech traditions and Christmas. The presentation includes pictures of the fishmongers who sell live carp from their booths in city squares all over Prague.
Ornament and books, from the Sokol Gift Shop, will be available.
Mart’s connection to New Prague dates back to 1880 when her grandfather, Joseph J. Kucera, was born in New Prague. His parents and older siblings came to New Prague in the early 1870s from South Bohemia from the villages of Dlouha Lhota and Skopytce, southeast of Tabor.
Marit is related to most of the Kuceras who live in “Minnesota Czech Country,” even if she grew up just south of the Canadian border near International Falls on her grandfather’s 1902 homestead. Only in the past few years has she met some of her Southern Minnesota relatives.
Marit Lee Kucera has been Honorary Consul since December, 2015.
The Honorary Consul office is locate in the 1887 CSPS building on West Seventh and Michigan in St. Paul, and is also home to Czech Slovak Sokol Minnesota.
Everyone young and old - even those not members of the Czech Heritage Club - is welcome to come and learn about Czech Christmas traditions.
