D-R-S Playoff Action

St. Patrick and Lonsdale won in the Red Division D-R-S playoffs, Union Hill and Veseli were victorious in the White Division and Elko and Prior Lake were the winners in the Blue Division.

All six teams are participating in Region playoffs which are underway.

The results of the past week:

RED DIVISION

Tuesday, July 27

St. Patrick 6, New Market 5

A two-out double by Adam Almich followed by a game-winning single by Matt Pexa earned St. Patrick a 6-5 win in an opening Red Division playoff game at Elko.

The contest found the Irish overcoming some early mistakes and staying in the game despite leaving 14 runners left on base.

Bill Junker, St. Patrick reliever, was the winning pitcher, taking over during a two-run New Market sixth inning. He gave up a bases-loaded walk but then retired 10 of the next 11 batters he faced.

Pexa batted 3 for 6 to lead the Irish at the plate, and Jeff Bjerke, Dan Popple, Craig Boser and Wade Schuknecht had two hits each. Bjerke's hits included a run-scoring double in the sixth inning.

New Market totaled six hits among six different players with Garret Felder hitting a leadoff triple in the sixth and driving in a run with a sacrifice fly. Dan Chies singled in Felder in the sixth and Wes Straight's walk was the other RBI.

St. Patrick 12, Lonsdale 4

St. Patrick batters banged out 20 hits at Lonsdale to gain the Region 6C tourney with a 12-4 win.

Bill Dunker pitched in relief for the Irish from the sixth inning on to get the save, striking out seven and allowing only one hit.

Paul Meyer put St. Patrick on the board in the first inning with a two-run homer and also batted in a run in the second with a double.

Jeff Bjerke hit an RBI double in the sixth inning and Adam Almich drove in two runs with an eighth-inning double. The Irish batting attack included four hits by Dan Popple, three hits each by Meyer and Wade Schuknecht and two hits each by Matt Pexa, Bjerke and Craig Boser.

The Aces had a solo homer by Brian Vosejpka in the fourth inning, three hits by Chad Vosejpka and two by Mike Jirik.

Sunday, Aug. 1

Lonsdale 6, New Market 0

Brian Vosejpka pitched a six-hitter and went the distance as the Aces won at home in a shutout against New Market, 6-0, to get the division runnerup spot for the Region 6C tourney. Vosejpka struck out seven.

It was a pitchers' duel for five innings before an injury to the Muskies' starter, Jeremy Wieland, forced him out of the game. Wieland hurt himself in a fall while fielding a bunt with one out in the sixth and was removed from the game.

Lonsdale 1-0 lead in the first came on a Chad Vosejpka leadoff double, Bryce Barry's single and a sacrifice fly by Tom Popp held up until the sixth and the Aces scored four after Wieland left and another run in the seventh.

Popp hit a two-run double in the sixth and two errors along with singles by Mike Jirik and Chad Hoffman scored two more.

In the seventh, Chad Vosejpka scored on a fielder's choice by Popp.

Brad Fredrickson had two of the six Muskies hits and Dan Chies hit a double.

WHITE DIVISION

Tuesday, July 27

Union Hill 6, New Prague 2

Adam Wiener pitched an 11-strikeout five-hitter at Union Hill as the Bulldogs beat the Orioles 6-2 in a series opener.

Wiener yielded a triple to Chad Thorp and a double to Sam Gross, both in the eighth inning. The other hits were singles by Gross, Dale Lapic and Derek Fautsch.

Union Hill took a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a Rick Bell double, John Masberg's single and an RBI fielder's choice by Jeff Bruder helping to score the runs.

In the second inning, Adam Giesen doubled. After an out, Jesse Bastyr hit a double to drive in Giesen.

Bruder also hit a double.

Matt Sticha, who had three hits, socked a two-run homer in the fifth.

Tom Carpentier doubled in the sixth and scored Union Hill's final run.

Each team got a run on a wild pitch.

Montgomery 4, Veseli 1

The Mallards scored unearned runs in the third inning, opening up a 3-0 lead and it was enough for them to defeat the visiting Veseli 4-1 in the series opener.

Pete Pelowski and Greg Westerman boarded on errors, Pelowski scoring on the second miscue. Josh Kuchinka walked and Christian Anderson hit a two-run single.

Dustin Steinhoff hit a solo home run for Veseli in the fourth inning and Robert Weaver matched that for the Mallards with a four-base swat in the fifth inning.

Chris Ziskovsky was the winning pitcher, working until one out in the eighth and striking out ten. Joe Friedges pitched the distance for the Warriors.

Veseli 6, Montgomery 5

The Warriors staged a two-run rally in the last of the ninth to edge Montgomery at Union Hill, 6-5, and even the series.

Veseli was a run behind when Chad Krenik led off the ninth with a single. Dave Miriovsky was hit by a pitch, Dan Novak bunted and reached on an error, scoring Krenik. Eric Steinhoff then laid down a successful suicide squeeze bunt for his third hit and the game-winning RBI.

Steinhoff also drove in two other runs with a fifth-inning double.

Two Mallards' runs were also unearned. Others scored a single by Bert Westerman, a sac fly by Nick Worm, and a ninth-inning single by Greg Westerman.

Robert Weaver and Dave Barnett had two hits each for the Mallards, with Weaver hitting a double; and Steve Olson had two hits for Veseli.

Dan Novak struck out 13 to get the win.

Union Hill 12, New Prague 0

The Bulldogs eliminated New Prague from the playoffs with a one-sided, 12-0, seven-inning win at New Prague.

John Masberg hit a three-run homer in the first inning to start the Union Hill scoring and a leadoff homer in the sixth. Matt Sticha, the winning pitcher, hit an RBI triple in the third inning and Phil Giesen hit a two-run triple in the fifth. Each of the above had two hits.

The Orioles were limited to singles by Angel Cortez, Derek Fautsch, Marty Kadrlik and Nick Schoenecker.

Sunday, Aug. 1

Veseli 1, Montgomery 0

Consecutive singles by Dave Miriovsky, Dan Novak and Steve Olson with two outs in the seventh inning scored the lone run of the game as Veseli defeated Montgomery on the Mallards diamond, 1-0, to put the Warriors in the Region playoff.

The score decided a pitchers' battle between Joe Friedges of Veseli and Chris Ziskovsky and Robert Weaver of the Mallards.

Each team had eight hits with Neil Fischer of Veseli getting the only extra-base hit, an eighth-inning double.

Elko 8, Webster 2

Elko led all the way from the second inning on and defeated Webster 8-2 at Elko in a Sox home game.

Josh Thom scored four runs for the Express and hit a solo home run in the fifth inning.

Justin Bailey doubled and scored in the second as Elko took a 2-0 lead. Tres Humerickhouse and Nick Davis also drove in runs.

Nick Nannen batted 4 for 4 for Webster and Joe Dvorak drove in two runs with singles.

Six walks given up by pitcher Dane Thomforde came at inopportune times and helped Elko.

The Saints scored two unearned runs in the eighth inning to defeat Prior Lake at Elko, 8-6, in their first playoff game, which was played at Elko.

Jon Deutsch hit a double for St. Benedict in the third and Keith Plekkenpol hit an RBI double for lead run in the seventh inning.

Dusty Olynyk led off the eighth for Prior Lake with a double and had three hits and three RBI's, and B.J. Benz, Greg Faue and Joe Chapman also hit doubles.

Jeff Joosten continued his hot hitting, driving in all five of Elko's runs with a three-run homer in the fifth inning and a two-run double in the seventh as the Express gained the Region 3C playoff with a 5-1 win over St. Benedict at Elko.

Rob Brick spaced seven Saints hits, went the route, and struck out 11.

St. Benedict scored an unearned run in the fourth as John Lambrecht, Jake Lucas and Nate Warden all singled, but the ball was dropped on a play at the plate, which allowed the run.

Casey Johnson batted 2 for 4 and Kyle Johnson 2 for 5 as Prior Lake defeated Webster at Veterans Field, 11-4.

Casey scored four runs and the Mudcats had a big, five-run eighth inning.

Mike Sandman hit a double for Webster and driving in the runs were Kurt Seurer with a two-run double and Joe Dvorak with two run-scoring singles.

Prior Lake 11, St. Benedict 0 (7 inn.)

Prior Lake earned the right to play in the Region 3C tourney with an 11-0 blanking of St. Benedict at Elko. The Mudcats belted out 17 hits while Ryan White pitched most of the game and held the Saints to six hits.

Justin Schliep hit a run-scoring double in the fourth and Kyle Johnson, Casey Johnson and B.J. Benz had three hits each. Greg Faue, Cory Callahan and Joe Chapman added two hits apiece.
