Day 2 of deer season brings good results

By Bill Bartusek, Outdoors Columnist

The Minnesota Deer Opener promised to have mild weather, and it sure was.

With that came a howling south wind. Deer don't like that much wind, so they don't move when it blows. So, Saturday in the New Prague area, things were pretty quiet. The deer sat tight and few shots were fired.

Deer can never stay put during the rut, so Sunday things seemed to pick up as we heard about people starting to see and harvest some deer.

At the farm, Saturday brought nothing. Things changed on Sunday. First thing in the morning Brandon Palma took a nice two-point buck. Later in the afternoon my son Billy nailed a high-racked eight-pointer. That put the finishing touch on the boys' season. Dennis Palma was also filled out, so all three had their deer. As we called around and talked to others, it became apparent the deer opener turned out to be pretty good. The rut helped overshadow the winds, and the warm weather kept hunters in the field, and that spells for success.

The season isn't over by any means. Cooler weather will bring out more deer. I can't wait for my hunt!
