Demolition work begins on old Scott Co. Jail

On Friday Oct. 20, a fence was installed to enclose the work area. This work area includes two parking lots around the Scott County Government Center, Parking Lot E, located east of the Justice Center Building (Fifth Avenue lot), and Parking Lot F, south of the Courthouse Annex and Jail.

No parking will be allowed in these lots until the buildings are demolished and the area is returned to the county for use.

The contractor began salvage operations inside the buildings on Monday, Oct. 23, with the actual tear down scheduled to begin Friday, Oct 27, according to Chuck Mallory, facilities project supervisor with Scott County. The jail will be the first building to go, with the annex following close behind. The building teardown should take five to seven days.

As part of this process, the center stairwell access to the second floor of the Government Center will be closed to isolate the re-construction area. Signs will be posted when this takes effect. Other landings in the central stairwell may be affected as well, and will be posted with signs as necessary. Chuck Mallory
