DJ’s represent USA at Tug-of-War World Championships

Tug-of-War clubs from 23 countries converged on Rochester September 2-5 for the World Championships in that sport, with the United States women’s team bringing home gold and bronze medals. Helping make up the U.S. women’s team and the men’s were members of DJ’s Tug-of-War Club, which has members from the New Prague area.

Held at the Olmsted County Fairgrounds, the 2004 Tug-of-War International Federation (TWIF) Outdoor World Championships games had open and closed competitions.

For the women’s team winning the gold medal in the 520-kilo weight class, in the closed competition, at the World Championships was a special accomplishment. It was the first gold won by the USA at the World Championships since joining the TWIF in 1978.

The USA team had to fight for the gold against Sweden in the finals. The Swedish team took the first match after 51 seconds, but after a short break the U.S. women came back and, after straining for 1 minute and 27 seconds, won the second match and the gold.

The women’s teams also brought home bronze medals in the open and closed competitions. DJ’s won a bronze in the open competition in the 520-kilo weight class. Also in the open competition the Oregon Pullers from Wisconsin, which has members from the area, won a bronze in the 560-kilo weight class. In closed competition the U.S. team took the bronze in the 560-kilo weight class.

The USA men’s team was also made up mostly of members from DJ’s men’s team. They finished seventh in the 560-kilo closed weight class.

DJ’s Tug-of-War Club will be hosting an exhibition/competition this Saturday at Memorial Park during Dozinky.
