Donald Gerlach, 74

Donald Gerlach, 74, of Apple Valley died Monday, Dec. 17, 2007.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rosemount on Thursday, December 20, 2007, in conjunction with burial at Fort Snelling with full Honor Guard.

Don was born on March 27, 1933 in Goodhue County, Douglas Township to August Gerlach and Catherine Gergen. Don graduated from Cannon Falls High School in 1951 and served four years in the Navy. He married Marlene Schneider in 1958. They owned the Tiger Inn in Farmington from 1959-1961. In 1963, Don and Marlene moved to Apple Valley where they raised their family. He was a long time active member of the American Legion Post 1776, a member of the Dakota County V1457 of the 40/8, and belonged to the Knights of Columbus. He retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1984. Don liked to spend time camping in his trailer on the Mississippi River near Alma, WI in the summertime. He loved sports and was an avid Vikings and Twins fan.

He is survived by children Greg Gerlach, Apple Valley, Connie Springstead, Dewey, AZ, Niki Johnson, Belle Plaine, Kurt Gerlach, Apple Valley, Karla (Richard) White, Raleigh, NC, Chris (Shelli) Gerlach, Apple Valley, by their mother, Marlene Gerlach of Apple Valley, 18 grandchildren, brother William (Mary) Gerlach, sister-in-law Bernadette Ohnsorg, and special friend Irene Luedke. Don was preceded in death by his brother Bernie.
