Dozinky 2010 a big success

By Chuck Kajer, Managing Editor

Hundreds of area residents put many hours of effort into making this year's Dozinky, a Czech Harvest Festival, a big success. But despite all of this effort, the ultimate success depends on the weather.

After a cold morning that scared off a few people, keeping them away from the downtown area, and a brief scare where rain and possibly some sleet fell for a few moments during the parade, Saturday turned into a great day.

There was plenty of food, plenty of goodies and plenty of music for those thousands of people who stopped by to enjoy the festivities. Dozinky provides an opportunity to celebrate every aspect of the New Prague community, including the can-do spirit of the residents who put so much time into making it a success.

From the first Dozinky, 25 years ago, the person who oversees the Dozinky celebration has been the executive director of the New Prague Chamber of Commerce. Each person who has served in that post over 26 years of celebrations - Bill Frost, Melissa Langer, Kim Gassner and now Kristy Mach, have added their own imprint on the celebration, following up on the successes of the past and building on them. In addition, the rest of the Chamber staff, the members of the board of directors and the membership of the Chamber have volunteered to make the festival the long-term success it has become.

A year ago, there was concern that the Dozinky Festival might need to make major changes due to a decision by the Minnesota Department of Transportation that they would not allow Highway 13-19 to close for the duration of the festival. The Chamber was an integral part of the effort to lobby MnDOT and the legislature to reverse its decision.

That means that next year's Dozinky Festival can continue to build on the successes of the past. We are looking forward to it!
