DRS League concludes regular season

The Dakota-Rice-Scott Baseball League concluded its 2016 season Sunday with the New Market Muskies, St. Patrick Irish, Faribault Lakers and Prior Lake Mudcats earning the top four spots in the standings and automatic berths into the Region 3C playoffs.

Eight other teams were scheduled to begin best-ofthree playoff series on Tuesday, July 26, Pairings are: Webster vs. Montgomery, St. Benedict vs. New Prague, Lonsdale vs. Shakopee and Veseli vs. Union Hill. Winners in the best-of-three series join the four other teams in the Region 3C double-elimination tournament, which begins Sunday, July 31.

Tuesday, July 19 Lakers 5, Muskies 4 A passed ball with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Faribault a 5-4 win over New Market Tuesday, July 19, in Faribault. The Lakers led 3-1 early, but New Market took the lead with three runs in the fifth before Faribault tied it in the bottom of the sixth. Scott Lyden, Nick Rost and Parker Holmstrom had two hits each for New Market and Kyle Bergstrom had two RBIs. Ryan Archambault had three hits for Faribault, with Mitch Johnson and Joey Grote adding two each. Jack Helgeson had the complete game win, allowing nine hits and striking out six. Nate Rost went the distance to take the loss, allowing 10 hits and striking out five.

Aces 13, Coyotes 2 Lonsdale pounded out 18 hits as the Aces defeated Shakopee 13-2 in Shakopee Wednesday, July 20. Ben Lazzari started and went seven innings for Lonsdale against his former team to take the win. He allowed six hits and struck out six. Michael Rohboom pitched two innings of relief. Isaac Pint had three hits and Lance Anderson and Phil Goedderz had two each for Lonsdale. Shakopee’s Zak Hoffman had two hits. Cody Pamperin started and took the loss, with Alec Pauly and Andy Lazzari pitching in relief.

Mudcats 10, Bulldogs 5 Prior Lake scored three runs in each of the first two innings and that would be all they needed as they defeated Union Hill 10-5. The Mudcats led 7-1 when Union Hill staged a comeback, scoring four runs in the fourth. Levi Schneider and Jonathon Houston had three hits each for Prior Lake, with Cole Bjorge, Kyle Schmidt and Benjamin Benz each getting two. Bjorge hit a home run for Prior Lake. Bryan Lindner, Jesse Bastyr, Jeff Dietz and Nate Berg had two hits each for Union Hill. Topher Rose was the winning pitcher, with Hunter Piehl taking the loss.

Mallards 15, Orioles 7 Montgomery scored six runs in the fifth inning to take the lead and added six more in the eighth to put the game away as they defeated New Prague 15-7. Eric Iverson went 5-for-5 with a homer, a double and four RBIs to lead the Mallard attack. Tyler Bednar had three hits, Tom Flicek two and Johnny Krocak added a home run. Ted Christian got the win in relief of Trevor Smisek. Chase Buthe took the loss.

Express 12, Irish 2 Elko scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to end the game via the 10- run rule in defeating St. Patrick 12-2. John Hayes was the winning pitcher for the Express. Josh Simon had two of St. Patrick’s five hits. He was also the losing pitcher, with Danny DeGross and Zach Seuer pitching in relief.

Thursday, July 21 Bulldogs 12, Orioles 3 Union Hill roughed up New Prague pitching for 14 hits and 11 runs as they defeated the Orioles 12-3. Adam Gill had three hits while Eric Bisek and Jesse Bastyr had two hits each for the Bulldogs. Daniel Feneis pitched seven innings and struck out 11 to take the win, with Bryan Lindner pitching two scoreless innings of relief. Dusty Beckius took the loss for the Orioles.

Mallards 2, Lakers 0 Montgomery concluded the regular season on a winning note, defeating Faribault 2-0 in Montgomery Thursday, July 21. Johnny Krocak allowed just two hits and struck out seven for the complete game win. The Mallards scored both their runs in the third inning, with Aaron Dwyer driving in Tyler Bednar, then Ryan Iverson getting a base hit to score Dwyer. Evan Knutson took the loss for Faribault.

Friday, July 22 Irish 13, Aces 2 St. Patrick scored seven runs in the third inning on their way to a 13-2 win over Lonsdale Friday, July 22. Josh Simon led the way for the Irish on Friday night in Lonsdale going 4-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Kenny Johnson, Matt Ambroz and Augie Isaacson each had two hits and two RBI. Jordan Goracke added three hits to the St. Patrick total of 16 as well. Bill Dunker won his seventh game of the season, pitching six innings while striking out four. For Lonsdale, Matt Tschida had three hits, while Phil Tisdel took the loss.

Saturday, July 23 Saints 7, Mudcats 6 The St. Benedict Saints rallied to defeat the Prior Lake Mudcats on Sunday in St. Benedict. The Mudcats used the long ball to take a 6-2 lead. Two-run shots from Cole Bjorge and BJ Benz and a solo home run from Kyle Schmidt staked Prior Lake to the lead. The Saints rallied for four runs in the seventh to tie the game at six. Johnny Dittman, Tanner Oakes, Scott Eischens and Andrew Huss all had singles in the inning. Matthias Duevel knocked home Eischens with a gamewinning RBI single in the eighth inning. Paul Hentges earned his first win pitching three innings in relief of Huss. Jake Lehrer took the loss.

Sunday, July 24 Muskies 4, Bulldogs 2 New Market scored twice in the top of the 11th inning to take a 4-2 win over Union Hill. New Market led 2-0, but the Bulldogs scored a pair of unearned runs in the eighth to send the game to extra innings. Derek Bergstrom drove in the winning run with a suicide squeeze, scoring Scotty Lyden. Bergstrom was the winning pitcher, going four innings in relief of Parker Holmstrom. Nathan Olson had two hits for Union Hill. He was also the losing pitcher, coming on in relief in the 11th. Nate Berg and Danny Beckius also pitched for Union Hill.

Orioles 9, Sox 4 James Fuerniss started for the Orioles and picked up his first career DRS win. Dust Steinhoff hit a threerun home run in the first inning to get things going for the Orioles. Ted Nytes also followed with a triple scoring Dan Novak. In the second Justin Novak, Aaron Shetka and Dan Novak would all double, which would lead to four more runs. Webster answered back in the second with hits from Nate Nielsen, Marcus Pleiss and Jeremy Wieland which would be good for two runs. Nielsen, Wieland ,and Jake McDonald led the Sox each collecting two hits apiece. Zack Sirek picked up the save, pitching the last three innings of the game.

Warriors 5, Saints 4 Veseli came out on top of a well-played season finale in St. Benedict. Veseli scored two in the first inning as Nate Novak hit a single to left scoring Brett Kriha and Tyler Busch. Nathan Simon scored for Veseli in the second inning on a bases-loaded walk. Nick Heitkamp scored for St. Benedict in the second on an RBI single by Tanner Oakes. Veseli scored two more in the fourth on an RBI double by Eric Steinhoff, scoring pinch-runner Jordan Chlan and Busch, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. In the eighth, Johnny Dittman walked, Michael Pauly singled and Nick Heitkamp singled to score Dittman. St. Benedict threatened in the ninth, scoring two more runs with the tying run on first before Eric Steinhoff came in to record the final two outs picking up the save. Ben Doerr picked up the win for Veseli and Heitkamp took the loss.

Irish 6, Mudcats 4 Kyle Schmidt got the Mudcats off to a hot start at Church Festival Day at Bonin Field, wrapping a first-inning three run homer around the right field fair pole. St. Patrick's Derek Hahn answered back loudly in the bottom half with a three-run home run of his own, with a resounding shot to right center, high up into the pine trees. A Prior Lake error would cost them a run in the fifth inning giving the Irish a 4-3 lead. Brok Schwartzkopf singled in Derrick Isaacson, who reached on an error, in the sixth to make the score 5-3. In the eighth, the Mudcats rapped back-to-back twoout doubles by Cole Bjorge and Kyle Schmidt to close the gap to 5-4. Asacrifice fly by Augie Isaacson would score AJ Chappuis in the bottom of the eighth to give closer Seth Ambroz a little room to breathe. Chappuis had three hits for the Irish. Zach Seurer went eight solid innings to pick up the win and Ambroz notched the save. Isaac Saad pitched well in a losing effort and was the victim of a couple of Mudcat errors that cost him.

Aces 9, Coyotes 8 Tyler Sticha's walk-off single off of Justin Evans boosted the Lonsdale Aces to a 9-8 win over Shakopeeat Lonsdale Sunday. The two teams combined for 17 runs and 22 hits, including six extra base hits. Lance Anderson reached base three times in the game for the Lonsdale Aces. He scored one run and had one RBI. He doubled in the sixth inning. Travis Scheffler had two hits for Lonsdale. Jeff Hohenstein and Tyler Sloss each had two hits for Shakopee. Phil Tisdel got the win for the Lonsdale Aces. Justin Evans took the loss for the Coyotes.
