Elko New Market Council approves hiring public works employee

The Elko New Market City Council took the next step in finding a public works employee at its Thursday, Feb. 8, meeting, with a consensus to pursue hiring an individual.
Councilmember Dennis Melgaard voiced the most opposition to the hiring of an employee. The city in southeastern Scott County is looking at increasing its staff to help take care of its infrastructure. Melgaard questioned whether the city had enough funds to hire both a full-time public works employee and police chief.
Mayor Kent Hartzler said there was a need for a public works employee. Also, while working on the city's budget, city staff found there were enough funds for both positions.
The council also discussed at what level the employee should be hired: Public Works I or II.
I don't think there's a use for a Public Works II employee right now
