Elko New Market delays decision on new employee

Patrick Fisher, Staff Writer

The Elko New Market City Council talked about the possibility of hiring a full-time public works employee at its Thursday, Jan. 25, meeting, deciding to table further discussion until its next meeting when it would have more information.

The council had talked about hiring an additional employee for public works had already been discussed and is part of the city's budget.

The city currently has one full-time public works employee, Marty Deutsch, three part-time employees and other groups to help with the maintenance of the community. The new person, who would come in at an entry level position, would help Deutsch and be able to work more hours than the part-time employees.

City Administrator Tom Terry said city staff wanted direction from the council about pursuing the position.

Councilmember Dennis Melgaard was not in favor of hiring a full-time employee during the winter. He wanted more information and was concerned that the city would spend funds on equipment needed for the position, funds he wasn't sure the city had. He wanted to put off a decision for some time.
