Elko New Market hires full-time police chief

Patrick Fisher, Staff Writer

Elko New Market City Administrator Tom Terry expects he'll have news about the city's new full-time police chief at the Elko New Market City Council's Thursday, July 26, meeting.

The council recently unanimously authorized Terry to offer the position to Rick Jensen. He's a familiar face, currently serving the city in a part-time capacity.

Originally, Jensen was among four candidates for police chief of the community. The field narrowed when the other three finalists withdrew before the Wednesday, July 18, open meeting with the council.

The other three candidates were Jeff Cummins, Glencoe's police chief; Jeff McCormick, Chatfield's police chief; and Scott Harr, chair of the Department of Criminal Justice at Concordia University. McCormick decided to accept the position of police chief in Cannon Falls, and Harr decided to remain at Concordia.

Jensen has been serving the community for 16 years. He began when Elko New Market was still two individual cities as a member of the Elko Police Department, with all officers working part-time. Since April 2001 he has served the city as its chief.

Creating a full-time police chief position was one of the first decisions for Elko New Market, which combined into one city at the beginning of this year.

Chief Jensen has already provided the community with years of service and would excel in the full-time position if he accepts
