Elko New Market mayor, council members picked

Current Elko mayor Kent Hartzler was elected the first mayor of Elko New Market. He will take office in January, after the merger of the two cities in southeastern Scott County. Hartzler received 568 votes while his opponent, Henry Zweber of New Market, received 460.

The city council will consist of three current council members and one former mayor. Josh Storlie of New Market and Dennis Melgaard of Elko, both current council members, earned the four-year seats on the council. Storlie received 637 votes and Melgaard 514, while Joe Molitor, also a New Market council member, had 399 votes.

Jason Ponsonby, current New Market council member, and Carolyn Miller, former Elko council member and mayor, were elected to the two-year seats on the council. Ponsonby had 628 votes, Carolyn Miller 501, Linda Borgen 352 and Millie Theilmann 137.

In Helena Township, two supervisors and one treasurer were returned to office without opposition. They were Treasurer Patricia Lambrecht and Supervisors Terry Maas and Joseph Pexa.
