Elko New Market moves to phase two of Co Rd 2 project

Patrick Fisher, Staff Writer

The Elko New Market City Council held a workshop on the second phase of the Scott County Road 2 project before its Thursday, Dec. 13, meeting.

The project calls for the reconstruction of the road that runs down the Main Street of New Market. Rich Revering of Bolton & Menk, engineers for the city, presented the information during the public hearing to the council and about a dozen residents. He noted that while the county is paying for the road work, Elko New Market will have to help pay amenities, such as sidewalks, sanitary sewer, water main and the possible burying of some overhead electric and telephone lines.

The work is to begin at Church Street and continue east just past Idaho Avenue, an undeveloped road on the outskirts of the city. Plans include widening the roadway to three lanes.

There has been discussion about reconstructing Church Street one block to the south of County Road 2. The proposed work would improve the parking lanes on the west side of Church Street. Revering explained that a handicapped ramp and a series of steps would be put in to allow people to reach the stores on that side of the street. He added that one or two parking stalls may be lost, but parking would be added on the east side of Church Street.

The estimated cost to the city for the project is $2.2 million. Revering cautioned that the estimated assessments of $463,207 were only those of the firm and not the final numbers.

Those assessments will include work on the sidewalk, curb and gutter, water service lines and other items.

Toni Maat who owns Windmill Feed & Pet Supply along Main Street asked that when the final assessments are done those businesses that have their own parking lots be taken into consideration.

There will be other meetings ton continue discussion of the project. The scheduled approval of plans and specifications is for March, with construction to begin in July.
