ENM Council looks at zoning, building issues

The Elko New Market City Council made changes to its zoning ordinances as its members approved amendments regarding buildings.
City Planner Bob Kirmis presented the items at the council's Thursday, March 27, meeting. One dealt with the city's site and building plan review, and the other was for building types and materials.
The first amendment would subject all permitted uses to a site and building plan review process. Currently, the procedure only applies to buildings, additions and alterations for permitted uses in the city's R-5, downtown residential, and B-2, downtown business, districts.
Kirmis said the amendment was prompted by a new bar and restaurant that opened on Scott Co Rd 2.
He added the site review will result in better projects, although it will add about two months to the time of the project. Public hearings won't be needed with the review process, with only a few exceptions.
Kirmis said councilmember Carolyn Miller asked if additions to single-family homes might be included in the exceptions for projects that don't need to go through a review. Kirmis thought it would be a good idea to add that to the list.
