ENM to hire interim police officers

At its Thursday, Nov. 19, the Elko New Market City Council approved a search for interim officers for the city's Police Department.

Elko New Market City Administrator Tom Terry explained the search for the interim officers has grown out of the search for an interim police chief to replace Rick Jensen, who recently resigned from the position. Terry said he should have some candidates for that position by the first week of December.

The interim officers are to help the city meet its patrol needs. Currently Officer Eva Rudolph is the acting chief. She is a part time officer in Elko New Market and a full time K-9 officer with the Apple Valley Police Department.

Terry noted the interim police officers will be part time and in service until the city can hire permanent ones.

Earlier this year, the council began discussions of whether it could save money by contracting with the Scott County Sheriff's Office. Last spring, in a controversial 3-2 vote, the council eliminated its police force effective immediately, even before an agreement could be negotiated with the sheriff's office. Protests from a number of residents led to the reinstatement of the department. Even with that, six of the city's seven police officers, including a full time chief and sergeant and five part time officers, have resigned over the last few months.

The city chose not to replaced the officers until a report by Matrix Consulting Group was completed. The report, released in September, said the city would be better off keeping its police department rather than contracting with the sheriff's office.
