ENM post office opening delayed

Patrick Fisher, Staff Writer

The opening of the new Elko New Market Post Office has been delayed to Monday, Aug. 31.

Peter Nowacki, media contact for the United States Postal Service (USPS), explained some of the equipment couldn't be moved in time for the scheduled opening of Monday, Aug. 24.

The post offices in Elko and New Market were scheduled to close on Saturday, Aug. 22. Due to the delay, the two post offices will close at the end of business on Saturday, Aug. 29, then operations will be transferred to the new facility.

Postal officials say the new structure will provide an enhanced quality of service to the community and working conditions to employees.

The USPS will lease the approximately 4,000-square-foot facility. It is located on the east side of Elko New Market, directly north of Elko Speedway and south of Scott County State Aid Highway 2 Access to the building will be from France Avenue. Colin Krodel, postmaster at the New Market office, will be the postmaster for the new office.

While the two post offices are merging, both zip codes (Elko 55020 and New Market 55054) will remain in use.

The process for opening a new post office began in September 2007 when representatives of the USPS informed the Elko New Market City Council a new building was needed. From there, the current site was chosen and the construction of the building was done over the last year.
