Enough mud-slinging!

OK, we get it.

Hillary Clinton is evil, incompetent, untrustworthy and should be jailed. Donald Trump has told us so, and his followers firmly believe that. And no arguments to defend her reputation will change their minds.

Donald Trump is egotistical, vulgar, racist and thoroughly unfit to be president. Hillary Clinton has told us so, and her supporters firmly believe this. And no arguments to defend his reputation will change their minds.

The pro-Trump and pro-Clinton forces have been set in their mindset for months. Many others have not made up their minds. It seems that the big issues in this presidential election have been more about tearing down the other candidate than in supporting the platform of their own candidate.

Most every issue raised in Sunday’s debate seemed to devolve into character issues of one candidate or the other. While an answer may have started out on course, it wasn’t long until it evolved into some sort of slam at the opponent. We seldom heard a straight answer to the questions that were asked, instead getting preplanned talking points that steered the question to where the candidates wanted.

There is one more debate scheduled, on Wednesday, Oct. 19. It will be the final chance for the public to view, side-by-side, the two major candidates for president. It would be refreshing if instead of using this as an opportunity to attack each others’ character and bring up decades-old incidents, they would give us real, thoughtful answers regarding the important issues. That way, undecided voters could listen to the the direction the candidates want to take this country and make a thoughtful decision before going to the voting booth on November 8.

Is that too much to ask?
