By Chuck Kajer

Enrollment at New Prague Area Schools has gone up 8.7 percent from a year ago, based on first day of school enrollment figures from the district.

The biggest increase was at New Prague Primary School (K-2), which saw an increase of 86 students, from 636 students to 722, or 13.5 percent. This year’s kindergarten class has 249 students, compared to 222 last year.

New Prague High School (9-12) had an increase of 10.6 percent, or 102 students. That is largely due to the freshman class, which has 323 students, by far the largest of any in the district. Enrollment is 1,065 in the building, which has a listed capacity of 1,050.

New Prague Middle School, despite losing the large Class of 2008, still saw an increase of 35 students, to 701. That was an increase of 5.3 percent.

New Prague Intermediate had an increase of 29 students, or 4.5 percent.

The largest class in K-8 in the district is the kindergarten, at 249, followed by the sixth grade (246) and the first grade (240).

Classwise, numbers were up from the previous year at every level except this year’s seniors, which lost seven. Most classes in K-8 were up between 15-20 students. This year’s first, second and seventh grades were up 23 students from where they were last year as kindergarten, first and sixth graders.

Numbers were more stable at the district’s two parochial schools. St. Wenceslaus School saw an increase of eight students, or 2.1 percent, to 384 students. Their largest class is the second grade, with 50 students. The sixth and eighth grades have 37 students.

Holy Cross (Lonsdale-New Market-Veseli) School had an increase of three students (2.0 percent), to 155 students. Their largest class is the third grade, with 22 students, while this year’s sixth grade has just eight students.
