Eugene Schmid Sr., 95

Eugene C. Schmid Sr., 95, of New Prague, died on Monday, February 6, 2012, at Mala Strana Health Care Center in New Prague.

Born December 28, 1916, in Springfield, Eugene was a son of Constant and Frances (Bellig) Schmid. He attended Springfield Elementary School and New Ulm High School. He started his career in Cambria and Herman before moving to New Prague in 1938.

On October 16, 1939, he married Ordelle Flor at Holy Trinity Cathedral in New Ulm. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business and banking by attending night school through the American Banking Association Program. He was a Petty Officer 2nd Class in the U.S. Navy from 1943-45, and served in Pearl Harbor. He worked for the State Bank of New Prague for 33 years, with the exception of his active miliary service, and lived in New Prague for 37 years. He was actively involved in the VFW, American Legion, New Prague Fire Dept., Knights of Columbus, New Prague Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts, New Prague Golf Club, B and P Camp Pahuca Development, Veterans Honor Guard, Le Sueur County Red Cross, Fireman's Relief Association, VFW Drum Corp, New Prague Planning Commission, Scott County and Le Sueur County Bankers Associations, 2nd District MBA councilman, and St. Wenceslaus Festival, holding many positions in these organizations. After retiring in 1972 as the president of State Bank of New Prague, he worked with his son Gene at Schmid Agency for three years and then moved to Tucson, AZ in retirement. He was an avid golfer and was passionate about hunting, fishing and the outdoors, and loved working.

He is survived by his wife; five children Eugene (Sally) Schmid Jr., New Prague, Jon (Fern) Schmid, Sun City West, AZ, Lana (Ken) Witt, New Prague, Donna (Guido) Mann, Sierra Vista, AZ, Brad (Wendy) Schmid, Ham Lake; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a sibling Connie (Marianne) Schmid, Shakopee.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandchildren Jeffrey Schmid and Alissa Witt; and siblings Samuel Schmid and DonnDee Schmid.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in New Prague with the Rev. David Barrett officiating. New Prague firefighters will be in attendance.

Interment will be at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery. Urn bearers will be grandchildren Amy Schmitz, Chris Witt, DeeAnn Chan and Adam Schmid.

Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the services.

Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers. Arrangements are with the Bruzek Funeral Home in New Prague.
