Falcons end Trojans' season in semifinals

Faribault defeated New Prague 20-7 Saturday, Oct. 30, in the Section 1AAAA football semifinals.

The Falcons, who lost a last-second decision to the Trojans in last year's semifinals, overcame a 7-6 halftime deficit by scoring on its first two possessions of the second half, then continuing to run the ball to run time off the clock.

The Trojans started out on a good note, with Joe Hatch returning the opening kick 84 yards for a touchdown. That held up until the final minute of the second half when the Falcons scored on a one-yard run by Caleb Becker.

New Prague finishes its season with a 6-4 record. Faribault, also 6-4, advances to the Section 1AAAA finals. They will play at No. 1 seed Northfield (7-2), which defeated Winona 14-0 in the other semifinal.

Northfield is the only Missota Conference team remaining in the playoffs. Besides New Prague, three other teams lost their semifinal games. In Section 3AAAA, South St. Paul defeated Chaska and St. Thomas Academy beat Holy Angels. In Section 6AAAAA, Hopkins defeated Shakopee 45-42 in two overtimes.
