Fall sports at NPHS start Monday

The 2007 fall sports season gets underway at New Prague High School Monday with the first day of practice for eight teams in six sports.

For the first time, the school will be offering boys and girls soccer at the high school level. The sport was introduced last year at the middle school level, and this year both the boys and girls will be fielding junior varsity teams competing mostly against Missota Conference schools.

The first teams to get involved in competition will be the girls tennis and volleyball squads on Thursday, Aug. 23. The tennis team will compete in a tournament at Glencoe-Silver Lake High School, while the volleyball team hosts Owatonna.

All athletes must have a physical examination within the last three years on file at the school, and there is a fee of $125 per person, per sport, with a family cap of $375. Students eligible for free and reduced lunches are exempt from this fee. Students should inform the office if they are eligible.

A meeting will be held for all athletes in grades 9 through 12 and their parents at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13, at the high school gym. All rules and policies will be discussed at this meeting, and forms and fees should be turned in at this time. After the main meeting, athletes and parents will break into groups for meetings with the head coach in each of the sports.
