Fall sports practices start Aug. 17

Practices will get underway in all fall sports at New Prague High School on Monday, Aug. 17.

Three new head coaches and two new varsity sports make their debut this season. Jim Benick is the new football coach, Angela Andersen is the new volleyball coach and Sonja Kraft is the new girls swimming and diving coach. In addition, boys and girls soccer will field varsity teams for the first time this season, after a fielding junior varsity teams the past two seasons.

All athletes must have fees paid, a physical from the past three years on file, and eligibility and health forms turned in to be able to practice. Fees for fall sports are $145, though there is a family cap for the school year. Students whose families are on free and reduced priced lunches can make arrangements to work off some of the fees. They should contact the school's activities office at 952-758-1226.

Times and dates for practices are:

Boys and Girls Cross Country - grades 9 though 12 will practice at 8 a.m. at the high school. Nick Meyer is the boys coach and Julie Berg is the girls coach. The first meet for the Trojans will Friday, Sept. 4, in a meet at the Dakota County Fairgrounds in Farmington, hosted by Eagan.

Girls Tennis - Grades 9 through 12 will practice beginning at 8 a.m. at the high school. Practices will last until 11 a.m. from August 17 to 21. Matt Duoos is the head coach. The team's first match will be Tuesday, Aug. 25, at the Mankato East Invitational.

Volleyball - grades 9 through 12 will practice at 8 a.m. at the high school. Practices will last until 12:30 p.m. .from August 17 to 21. Angela Andersen is the new coach for the team, which will open its season Friday, Aug. 28, at Minnetonka.

Football - Grades 9 through 12 will practice at 8 a.m. at the high school. Practices will last until 2:30 p.m. for the first two weeks of the season. Jim Benick is the new head coach. The team will have its first game Friday, Sept. 4, at home against Faribault.

Girls Swimming - Grades 9 through 12 will practice at 8 a.m. for the first two weeks of the season. Practices this year will be at the Montgomery-Lonsdale High School pool as that facility has reopened. The bus will depart from New Prague Middle School at 7:15 a.m. each day. The practice sessions will last until noon daily. Sonja Kraft is the new head coach. The team will hold its first meet Tuesday, Sept. 1, at Mankato East.

Boys and Girls Soccer - Grades 9 through 12 will start at 8 a.m. at the high school. Practices will last until 11:30 a.m. each day. The program is in its third year and in its first year as a varsity program. Jon Hopke is the boys coach and Steve Kehrli is the girls coach. Both teams will have their first varsity matches on Friday, Aug. 28. The boys will be at Mankato West and the girls will be at home against Faribault.
