Fast fun at the Pinewood Derby

New Prague Cub Scout Pack 323 held its Pinewood Derby on Saturday, March 23. There were 34 Cub Scouts that participated in the race of hand made wood cars and 11 family members took part in the family class.

Held at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church’s Parish Activity Center, the Cub Scouts excitedly watched the small cars race down the track.

"We are very pleased with the turnout. The Scouts and family members had a lot of fun making the cars either at our two car clinics or at home with an adult," said Christi Ryburn, Committee Chair of Pack 323.

The clinics were held in January and February. Tools to work on the cars were available at the clinic. The scouts could paint the cars at home.

The top five winners were first place Kyle McCarthy, second place Wyatt Meyer, third place Vincent Meyer, fourth place Jadyn Hamilton and fifth place Thomas Johnson. The difference between the boys’ times was a fraction of a second as they each finished in less than three seconds. Noah Redfearn won the Turtle Award for having the slowest time.

There were also awards for the best design from each Cub Scout Den. The top winners were Josh Simon, Max Redfearn, Wyatt Meyer, Luke Jacobson, Matthew Ryburn and Cole Bailey.

The family class allowed parents or younger brothers and sisters to race cars. Winners in that class were Erik Forte, Tony Ferguson, Naomi Simon, Savannah Ryburn and Abbie DeLuca.

Pack 323 has about 50 active scouts and is made up of boys from Raven Stream and Falcon Ridge elementary schools. Lau’s Czech Bakery in New Prague donated various doughnuts to the Pinewood Derby.
