February’s top stories

By Chuck Kajer

Each month, we are asking our readers to pick the top story from the previous month. Last month, readers chose a story on high school wrestler Travis Rutt as January’s top story.

For those of you who missed it, each month, we are going to list some of the top stories from the previous month, based on the number of hits received on our web site. Readers can vote by email, fax or letter to let us know which story they think was the top story of the month.

We'll tally the votes and let you know next week what our story of the month is for February. Next December, in our Year-in-Review, we'll recap the year's top stories and pay special attention to the ones you chose as our Story of the Month.

Here are the stories you can vote on for February:

It has been a busy few weeks in covering both news and sports. In the last week, I’ve attended three meetings in New Market, Patrick Fisher has attended several meetings in New Prague, we’ve covered car crashes, fire calls (false alarms) and other breaking news, in addition to our regular news coverage. That alone has been enough to keep us busy.

On top of that, in sports, we’ve covered post-season competition in five sports, with the sixth, boys basketball, scheduled to start its section playoffs Wednesday at Faribault. That means we’ve covered events at the Xcel Energy Center (wrestling), Ridder Arena (girls hockey), Minneapolis North High School (girls basketball) New Prague Area Community Center (boys hockey) and the Roy Wilkens Auditorium (gymnastics). Special thanks go to Jay Schneider of the Lake Region Life in Waterville and Arv Olson of New Prague for taking photos at the state wrestling tournament. Hopefully we’ll get to cover basketball a while longer, but once that’s done, we’ll get a few weeks’ rest before the spring sports season begins.

Congratulations to New Prague’s Girls 12U-B hockey team, which won the Silver Region championship last week in Buffalo. They will be competing March 11-13 at the State Tournament in Faribault. This is the first time a New Prague Area Hockey Association team has advanced to state tournament play. Only one other New Prague team has won a region title, the Pee Wee B’s in 1999. My son was on that team, but at that time, there was no state tournament for B-level teams.

Two other NPAHA teams competed in region competition. The Bantam A team, consisting of 13- and 14-year-olds, placed sixth and the Pee Wee B1 team took third. Congratulations to them as well.

And finally, congratulations to Steph Solheid and Justin Turek, two New Prague High School seniors, for winning state championships in their respective tournaments last weekend. Solheid won the balance beam competition at the Class A gymnastics meet, while Turek won the 140-pound title in the Class AA wrestling tournament, defeating another New Prague resident, John Dvorak, who wrestles for Scott West, 3-2. Steph, Justin and their teammates can be proud of their accomplishments this season.
