Few changes in sections for Trojans in 2013-14

New Prague High School will have few changes in Minnesota State High School League section assignments for the 2013-14 school year. The MSHSL announced new section assignments Saturday, March 9.

New Prague Activities Director Brad Skogerboe said there were a few surprises, though. The biggest was that none of the Trojan sports teams were moved up to a higher class. It had been expected that the girls gymnastics team - the reigning state Class A champions, would move up a class due to enrollment increase, and boys basketball coach Aaron Jasperson had expected that his squad would also be moved up to Class AAAA.

Instead, both teams will stay in the same class and section they competed in during the current year. New Prague's MSHSL enrollment increased by just 12 students from the last placement two years ago, from 1,111 to 1,123.

The only Trojan teams changing sections are the girls basketball team and boys and girls cross country teams.

Girls basketball moves from Section 2AAA to Section 4AAA. That section will be loaded, as three teams in this year’s Class AAA state tournament will be in that section. New Prague, this year’s 2AAA champion, will be joined by Red Wing (this year’s 1AAA champion) and current 4AAA champion Hill-Murray. Another team, Simley, was ranked in the top 10 most of the season. Other teams in 4AAA will be St. Paul Harding, Highland Park, South St. Paul and Visitation.

The only other change is the boys and girls cross country team will return to Section 2AA after spending the last two years in Section 1AA.

Many of the sections have minor changes, but will pretty much be the same teams as in the past two seasons.
