That first Dozinky

This Friday and Saturday will be a busy day for The New Prague Times’ editor Chuck Kajer and myself as we will be covering the various activities that make up Dozinky, New Prague’s Czech Harvest Festival. Nearly each year, with the annual festival, I remember what my first Dozinky was like.

At that time in 1999, Chuck was working for another newspaper, and while I had help from other members of The Times’ staff, I was making my way up and down Main Street, taking photos and talking to people about the festival or meeting visitors. For photos I was being a little more stringent of what I took as we were still using film. I could only use so many rolls of film as we had to develop them. Besides the events on Main Street, I also was at Memorial Park to take a few photos of what was then the Alumni Softball Tournament.

When my Saturday was over, I took a few minutes to stop by Patty’s Place, where I ordered a Chai tea and propped my feet up. It’s almost become an annual ritual for me to do that and allow myself a breather.

I remember that Saturday was a beautiful day for weather. There was sun and it was warm, one of those late summer days that we in Minnesota get to enjoy before winter and helps us through the next few months.

Since then I’ve covered every Dozinky except one. That one year, a family wedding had been planned that same weekend and I attended it.

There have been some changes in Dozinky, but the major events have remained the same. Some activities have been tried, with a few no longer happening, while others have become their own annual traditions during the Czech harvest festival.

Just go vote This year’s election has been one that has had its ups and downs and it will likely have more of them. For me, I just want people to get out and vote. Occasionally I hear stories about people who are not voting as a form of protest. They have that right, but I’ve always been a believer that in voting that at least allows you some peace of mind that the candidate you want in office might get elected.
