Fishing, like the weather, warming up

Finally, a great weekend of weather during this roller coaster spring.

Area outdoor activity was in full swing Saturday, with people enjoying some sunshine and warm weather. Anglers were out in force checking out area lakes for panfish and game fish.

The bass season is in full swing and the muskie season is also now open. Crappies are spawning and providing some great action. Following soon will be the sunfish spawn and that bite will be fantastic.

Lakes in the north are playing catch up. Fishing there is more like early May than early June. Walleye fishing in the north is still as good as ever. For the first time this year accesses at Lake Mille Lacs were full of vehicles. However, the cool weather and high gas prices are keeping traffic numbers down when compared to other years.

Driving back and forth to the cabin was smooth and easy. Weed growth is just starting and panfish are just moving to the shallows. I also finally broke the ice and caught my first walleye of the year. It was during an evening outing Saturday. I boated and released four fish. The biggest was a dandy, 26-inch Walleye.

We caught our fish over sand in about 13 feet of water using bobbers and leeches. Let's hope June weather settles down not just for sportsmen, but for farmers too! Everything is way behind and just the opposite of what
we had a year ago. That's Minnesota weather. Each year is a different story.

Let's all have us a great June!
