Four from Holy Cross complete their master’s coursework

Holy Cross kindergarten teacher Mary Jakes; Second grade teacher Becky Malecha, Fifth grade teacher Emily Borene and Public Relations and Development Director, Mindy Reeder each completed their courses to obtain a Masters of Arts in Education degree recently.

“I truly enjoy what I do,” said Jakes. “I love teaching and I want to be the best teacher that I can be. Furthering my education allows me to keep abreast of new teaching methods and techniques available to help my students learn.”

Mary Jakes has been teaching at Holy Cross School for six years. She received her bachelor of arts from the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul and her MAED from Hamline University in St. Paul, earning a 4.0 during her master’s studies. She is also in the process of completing her K-12 reading licensure endorsement. She and her husband, Marvin, are residents of Montgomery and have three children.

Becky Malecha received her bachelor of arts from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. She completed her MAED through St. Mary’s University in Winona, graduating with a 4.0 grade point average.

“I wanted to challenge myself as a classroom teacher,” explained Malecha. “I was able to do my research in my classroom and implement my learning immediately.” Becky resides in Lonsdale with her husband, Greg, and their two children, with another on the way. She has been teaching at Holy Cross School for six-and-a-half years.

Emily Borene completed her MAED at Hamline University. She received her bachelor of arts from the College of St. Catherine and has been teaching at Holy Cross School for six years.

“I love teaching,” said Borene. “I wanted to further my education and believe that all people should be life-long learners, a message I try to teach to my fifth grade students.” Besides obtaining her MAED, Borene is completing a K-12 reading licensure endorsement. She and her husband, Mark, have two children and live in Northfield.

Mindy Reeder also completed her master’s degree coursework, graduating this spring from the College of St. Catherine’s in a program that was supported through the Archdiocesan of St. Paul’s scholarship program. She graduated with a 4.0 GPA and received an ETS excellence award recognizing her for scoring in the top 15 percent on her graduation exams.

“My education brought me a deeper understanding for children and how they learn,” said Reeder. “This knowledge not only assists me in a school setting, but also, at home with my three children. I hope that my example shows my children the value I place on education.”

Mindy has worked as the public relations and development director at Holy Cross School for more than a year and taught music at Holy Redeemer for two years. She obtained her bachelor of arts from the University of Minnesota and resides with her husband, Jim, and three children in Montgomery.

Holy Cross School encourages their staff to be life-long learners and is proud of the school team members who have completed their Master’s Degrees this year.
