Fundraiser for Veterans Memorial is Saturday

Saturday, Feb. 10, will be a big day at the Park Ballroom in New Prague.

The Ballroom will host a huge fundraiser to benefit the New Prague Veterans Memorial, which is proposed to be built in 2020 near Main Street in Memorial Park in New Prague. The Memorial would be built in conjunction with the 2020 Main Street Project.

Doors will open at noon and the Presenting of Colors by the New Prague Veterans Honor Guard will be at 12:45 p.m. The first band performs at 1 p.m., and between bands, there will be announcements and drawings. A silent auction will also be held, closing at 7:30 p.m. Those purchasing tickets need not be in attendance at the drawing, organizers say.

Tickets will be available at the door. Advance tickets are on sale at a discount at First Bank and Trust, the New Prague Chamber of Commerce and the City Club Bar.

About the Memorial

Talk of a Veteran’s Memorial began after New Prague area native Dale Means was killed in Iraq while serving with the US Marines.

“We wanted to do something, to give back to the community,” said JoLyn Williams, Dale’s sister and a member of the committee working on the monument.

She, her mother, Dale Lyn Means, and Dale’s wife, Andrea Means Lehman, drew up an idea on a napkin and first approached the city in 2014. Since then, they have worked with the local Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts to refine the idea and help pull together support for the project.

“We knew we couldn’t do this by ourselves,” JoLyn said.

Mark Dvorak, a local American Legion member and former district commander and state officer with the Legion, helped connect with a volunteer architect who drew up a formal plan. When it was ready, they came to the city council with a formal proposal.
