Gene LaFrance, 73

Gene LaFrance, 73, of Montgomery, died Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at Queen of Peace Hospital in New Prague, of pancreatic cancer.

Born June 19, 1932 in Omaha, NE, Gene was a son of Raoul and Virginia (Fisher) LaFrance. He graduated from Mankato High School and Mankato State University. He married Maureen McGinn on November 19, 1955 at St. Dominic Church in Northfield and served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957.

Gene was a past president and owner of Elysian State Bank and held various positions in banking throughout the state of Minnesota, including past president of Independent Bankers of Minnesota, board president of United Bankers Banks and Le Sueur County Bankers Association. He was also involved in several other community/area groups and organizations: Queen of Peace Hospital Board; one of the founding members of Montgomery Golf Club; trustee and finance chairman for Holy Redeemer Church; Montgomery-Lonsdale School Board for two terms; Chamber of Commerce; snowmobile club; co-founder of Montgomery Combined Charities Drive; community theater; Kolacky Parade volunteer and royalty chaperone; Montgomery Lions; Montgomery Hockey Association; and treasurer of Le Sueur County Historical Society.

He is survived by his wife, Maureen; two daughters, Sharon (Paul) Olszewski of Farmington and Renee (Bill) Plutt of Bloomington; a son, John (Sandy) LaFrance of Milford, OH; seven grandchildren; a sister, Virginia LaFrance of St. Peter; and three brothers, Al LaFrance of Stuart, FL, Pete (Carmen) LaFrance of Plymouth and Mike (Judie) LaFrance of Elysian.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 1 at 11 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montgomery, with Rev. Cory Rohlfing officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial. Readers were Mike LaFrance and Suzette LaFrance Burley. Gift bearers were the three children. Music was provided by Mary Blumhoefer Arguedas and Michelle LaFrance, soloists, and Rita Medvec, organist. A eulogy was given by Pete LaFrance and a thank you from the family was given by John LaFrance. Military rites were conducted by the Montgomery Area Veterans Honor Guard following the church service.

Casketbearers were Greg Olszewski, Tom Olszewski, Joe Plutt, Katelyn Plutt, Anne LaFrance Kemmer and Jeff LaFrance.

Burial will be held at a later date.

Visitation was held Thursday, June 30 from 4 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Keohen Memorial Funeral Home in Montgomery.
