Gene Shimota, 77

Gene Shimota, 77, of Foley, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006, at his home.

Born December 15, 1928 in rural Sibley Co., Eugene was a son of William and Celia (Cervenka) Shimota. He married Mary Agnes Traxler on May 29, 1954 at St. Henry Catholic Church in LeCenter. Gene graduated from Mankato State University and did graduate work there and at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, NY, University of Colorado and St. Cloud State. In 1957 the couple began their life in Foley after teaching in Hastings. Gene was assistant principal, taught chemistry and physics and 8th grade earth science at Foley High School before retiring in 1989. Gene and his family raised Columbia sheep and Simmental cattle for over 50 years. He enjoyed his various memberships, including 4-H, St. John's Catholic Church where he was past parish council member, the National Education Association, Pheasants Forever, American Legion, MN Farmer's Union, MN Simmental Assn. and Knights of Columbus Bishop Marty Council 3603.

He is survived by his wife; sons and daughters, Kevin (Cassie), Burnsville, Mark (Lesley), Savage, Lynn (Mark) Honnold, Minnetrista, David, Coon Rapids, John (Kim), Lakeville, Sarah (Dan) Klein, Minneapolis, Shannon (Chris) Giddings, Minnestrista; 18 grandchildren; a brother, George, Elko; and sisters, Irene Brown, Dundas and Janet Picha, New Prague.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Christopher Gene, on July 15, 1990.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, 2006 at St. John's Catholic Church, Foley. The Rev. Greg Paffel and Deacon Peter VanderWeyst will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Foley American Legion, Post 298.

Visitation was held from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 12 to 1 p.m. Monday at the Foley Funeral Home. Parish prayers were at 7 p.m. followed by Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:30 Sunday at the funeral home.
