George A. Hajney, 88

George A. Hajney, 88, of Montgomery, died Saturday, July 8, 2006, at Queen of Peace Hospital in New Prague.

George Arthur Hajney was born to Joe and Mary (Krava) Hajney on April 11, 1918 in Lanesburgh Township. Later the family moved to Lonsdale, where he attended school. He graduated from Faribault High School in 1936 and also attended Mankato State College.

George served in the U.S. Army during World War II and returned to live in Montgomery, where his parents were in the restaurant business. He was a salesman and worked for several companies, including Archer Daniels and G.T.A., from which he retired in 1981. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council for six years, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Montgomery Golf Club. He was also on the board of the golf club in its early years and helped with the Kolacky Day Parade for about 30 years. He was an avid baseball player in his youth and also loved hunting, fishing and golf.

George married Thelma (Sandy) Stadstad at Grand Forks, ND on November 28, 1962, and in 1964 they moved back to Montgomery.

He is survived by his wife; three stepsons, Terry (Muriel) Stadstad, Grand Forks, ND, David (Gwen) Stadstad, Montgomery and Dale (Linda) Stadstad, Prior Lake; four grandchildren, Sheila Horn, Darren Stadstad, Wade Stadstad and Kjersten Rosival; one great-grandchild, Allison Stadstad; and several nieces and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joe and Ray; and two sisters, Evelyn Rowland and Mary (Babe) Mucha.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, July 12 at 3 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Montgomery, with Rev. Robert Rendahl officiating. Burial was at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Montgomery, with military rites conducted by the Montgomery Area Veterans Honor Guard. Urnbearers were George’s grandchildren.

The Keohen Memorial Funeral Home in Montgomery assisted the family with arrangements.
