Gerald Smith, 68

Gerald M. Smith, 68, of Helena Township, Jordan, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007, at his home.

He was born December 29, 1938, in Minneapolis, a son of Millard Parker and Marion Frances (Whiteley) Smith. He attended Minneapolis South High School and the University of Minnesota and was an independent truck driver. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of the Savage American Legion Post #643. Jerry Smitty Smith's home away from home was Walleye DunDee's Resort on Lake Mille Lacs, Wahkon Bay. He enjoyed ice fishing and was a huge NASCAR fan. Jerry's dog, Tyler, was his constant companion.

He is survived by a son, Frank M. Smith, Longville; daughter, Barbara (Jay) Novotny, New Prague; a sister, Marilyn Morey, Modesto, CA; brother-in-law, Kenneth Bartell, New Prague; sister-in-law, Norma Smith, Illinois; six grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, C. Ross Smith; sister, Arloine Arlie Bartell; and brother-in-law, Robert Morey.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Bruzek Funeral Home in New Prague, with Rev. Gail Alexander of Epworth United Methodist Church in Minneapolis officiating. Interment was at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis. Urn bearer was a grandson, Patrick Smith.

Visitation was held from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bruzek Funeral Home in New Prague.

Memorials are preferred to the Dr. Gail Bender Cancer Fund at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park.
