Girl Scouts donate to Peace Center

By Patrick Fisher

Members of New Prague’s Girl Scout Troop 1406 donated boxes full of treasure to the Peace Center in New Prague on Thursday, April 7.

The donations, known as Treasure Boxes, were part of a project for the Girl Scouts’ Bronze Award. The girls were required to do a service project. The nine girls and their leaders began by discussing world hunger and then scaled down to how can they make a difference in the community. The Girl Scouts began the project in September, they based their whole year on the project, which they recently completed.

The Scouts sent out requests for donated items to local businesses and organizations and received some responses. All of the girls earned $25, which they used to buy boxes and items to go in them. They also decorated the boxes. The girls were able to put together 30 Treasure Boxes filled with little toys, hygiene items, non-perishable foods and snacks. Each box will go to a child between the ages of five and 10 whose parents utilize the Peace Center foodshelf.
