Girls fend off Bluejay comeback

Things seemed well in hand for the New Prague High School girls basketball team at halftime of their game with Waseca Thursday, Dec. 30. New Prague led by 17 points and had forced the Bluejays into a number of turnovers using their full-court pressure.

But Waseca fought back in the second half. Lexie Ulfers, a Minnesota State University-Mankato signee, had 20 points as the Bluejays closed to within four points with about five minutes remaining. The Trojans clamped down with their defense and outscored Waseca 16-4 in the final minutes to claim a 61-45 win.

Anna Rynda had the hot hand for the Trojans. The junior, averaging 22 points per game, scored a season-high 29 points. Taylor Rookaid added support with 12 points, while Sara Rookaird had 9, Makayla Reimers 6, Maggie Seter 4 and Lauren Carr 1.

The Trojans' pressure resulted in 15 steals in the first half and 21 for the game. Rynda and Sara Rookaird each had six steals. Seter dished out eight assists.

The Trojans were scheduled to begin Missota Conference play Tuesday, Jan. 4, at Shakopee. They are at Holy Angels Friday, Jan. 7.
