Girls glide past Raiders, Tigers
New Prague's girls basketball team continued to recover after their first Missota Conference loss in three seasons. The Trojans had no problems in wins over Northfield - a team that was rated in the top 10 in Class AAAA earlier this season - and Farmington.
The Trojans (15-4, 7-1 Missota), ranked No. 2 in Class AAA, were scheduled to host Red Wing Tuesday, Feb. 10. They will host Prior Lake in the first game of a girl-boy double header at 6 p.m. Friday.
New Prague will play Shakopee in a home game Tuesday, Feb. 17, then host Albert Lea Thursday, Feb. 19, in a makeup game.
Trojans 81, Raiders 44
New Prague used 67 percent shooting in the first half and intense defensive pressure to take a 49-27 lead by halftime and had no problem beating Northfield 81-44 Tuesday, Feb. 3, at New Prague.
The Trojans' Amanda Wagner had a double-double, scoring 18 points and getting 10 steals for the Trojans. Maggie Weiers had 17 of her game-high 27 points in the first half. Hannah Strop was also in double figures, with 19 points. Brit Rynda had six assists for the Trojans, who made 18 of 27 shots in the first half and 31 of 51 (61 percent) for the game. The Trojans had 20 steals.
Other Trojans scoring were Kayla Gill with eight, Rynda, five, Rena Kneeland, three and Kristin Carr, one.
Trojans 77, Tigers 43
New Prague didn't shoot as well against Farmington Friday, making 22 of 58 (38 percent). But the Trojans' pulled down 35 rebounds and had a number of second-chance baskets while their defense showed no signs of letting up as they defeated Farmington 77-43.
Wagner led all scorers with 23 points, and added seven rebounds and six steals. The senior had support from Rynda, who scored 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
Kneeland had five assists and four steals.
Also scoring for New Prague were Weiers and Strop with nine points each, Gill, six, Taylor Rookaird, four, Maggie Seter, Kneeland and Elly Reinke with three each and Carr, two.
