Girls hoops earns another big win

Another Friday night home game produced another win over a state-ranked opponent for the New Prague Trojan girls basketball team, as New Prague defeated Farmington 45-42 Friday, Jan. 28. Earlier in the week the Trojans lost a 65-55 Missota Conference contest to Chanhassen.

New Prague (12-5, 5-2 Missota) was scheduled to host Albert Lea Tuesday, Feb. 1, but the game was postponed. No makeup date has been set as of press time. The Trojans start the second half of their Missota Conference schedule Friday, Feb. 4, when they host Holy Angels, then will play Northfield Tuesday, Feb. 8, at home. The Trojans will face Prior Lake in a non-conference game Thursday, Feb. 10. That game is part of a girl-boy doubleheader in the Trojan gym and starts at 6 p.m.

Storm 65, Trojans 55

Chanhassen stormed to an early lead that the Trojans were never able to overcome in a 65-55 loss. New Prague trailed 28-24 at halftime.

Sara Rookaird led the Trojans with 11 points, while Anna Rynda and Taylor Rookaird had 10 each. All of Taylor Rookaird's points came from the free throw line, where she went 10-for-10. The Trojans shot an impressive 24 of 29 (83 percent) from the charity stripe, but that was offset by a poor field goal percentage.

Also scoring for the Trojans were Lauren Carr, who had eight points in her first game back from an ankle injury, Maggie Seter (7), Mikayla Beuch (4), Makayla Reimers (3) and Annie Dittberner (2).

Trojans 45, Tigers 42

In a battle between two No. 9-ranked teams, it was the Class AAA Trojans that pounced on the Class AAAA Tigers early, taking a lead they would never relinquish.

New Prague led 22-15 at halftime and their defense stifled Farmington's attack. Anna Rynda scored 11 of her game-high 18 points in the first half to pace the Trojans. Taylor Rookaird also scored in double figures for the Trojans with 12 points. Also scoring were Seter and Sara Rookaird with seven points each and Reimers with one.

Seter had five assists and three steals. She was also honored after the game for hitting her 100th career three-point shot.
