Girls hoops squad goes to 6-2

The New Prague High School girls basketball team opened the 2008 portion of the season with a pair of non-conference wins last week. The Trojans defeated Minnetonka 55-51 and Albert Lea 52-35.

New Prague, 6-2 on the season, was scheduled to open its Missota Conference schedule Tuesday at Hutchinson. They will be at home Thursday, Jan. 10, when they host Northfield, then travel to Mankato West for a 2:30 p.m. game Saturday, Jan. 12.

New Prague plays at Farmington Tuesday, Jan. 15.

Trojans 55, Skippers 51

New Prague opened up an 11-point lead at halftime over the visiting Skippers. Junior guard Amanda Wagner scored all seven of her points in the first half to help the Trojans take the big lead.

The Trojans hung on in the second half as the Skippers made a comeback attempt. Minnetonka capitalized at the free throw line, making 20 of 23, while New Prague made just 15 of 29.

New Prague had scoring from all eight players. Brit Rynda and Hannah Strop led New Prague with 10 each, while Anissa Svoboda and Maggie Weiers had nine each.

The Trojan defense did a good job, holding Minnetonka's top two scorers to just four points each.

New Prague again opened up a big lead in the first half, this time thanks to some sharp outside shooting. The Trojans had five three-points in the first half, from five players, and they led 34-18 at the intermission.

Albert Lea switched to a zone defense in the second half, and the Trojans waited patiently for their shots. The Trojans led the entire timeon their way to a 17-point win.

Amanda Wagner had a team-high 14 points, 11 of them in the first half. Kayla Gill added 11 from New Prague.
