Girls hoops team to open season Friday

The New Prague Trojan girls basketball team will kick off its season with a pair of games at the Pat Paterson Invitational at Hamline University in St. Paul this weekend.

The Trojans will face Eastview, last year’s Class AAAA third-place winner, at 5:45 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, and then take on Stillwater at 12:15 p.m. Saturday.

The Trojans will host last year’s Class AAAA runner-up, Shakopee at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29.

Coach Ron Gunderson begins his 41st season at the helm with a veteran squad. The Trojans are led by two Division II recruits. Maizie Deihl, who has signed with University of Minnesota-Duluth, is a five-year starter who missed the second half of last year with a knee injury. Taylor Hustad, who has signed with Winona State, is a four-year starter who picked up the scoring slack after Deihl’s injury last season.

The Trojans are coming off a disappointing 15-11 season where two key players, Deihl and post player Sally Traxler were lost for the season due to knee injuries. Both return to the lineup this year, however the team has already lost one player for the season. Guard Josie Herrmann suffered a knee injury during the soccer season.

Still, the Trojans have seven players returning.............
