Girls place 4th at Austin tourney

New Prague's girls hockey team competed in the Austin Merchants Tournament December 27 to 29, winning their opening game, but then dropping two to take fourth place.

The Trojans were scheduled to host Shakopee Tuesday, Jan. 4. New Prague will host defending Section 1A champion Red Wing Friday, Jan. 7. On Tuesday, Jan. 11, they play at Mankato East, then on Thursday, Jan. 13, New Prague hosts Farmington.

Trojans 3, Panthers 1

New Prague opened the tournament with a come-from-behind win against Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Tuesday evening.

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead with a goal midway through the second period. Shots in the first two periods were 20-20.

But the Trojan offense woke up in the third period, outshooting the Panthers 17-9. Dani Kocina scored a power play goal, with an assist from Hallie Paschke, at 6:50.

Ashley Adams put the Trojans in front with a goal at 13:30, with assists from Kasey Marquardt and Abby Bisek, then Kocina got an insurance goal with 51 seconds left, unassisted.

New Prague outshot Spring Lake Park 37-29, with Shyler Sletta making 28 saves in net.

Novas 2, Trojans 1

New Prague's McKenzie Smith scored midway through the first period, but Minneapolis answered with a goal three minutes later and scored a goal in the second to take a 2-1 win over the Trojans.

New Prague outshot the Novas 30-27, with Sletta making 28 saves.

Raiders 2, Trojans 0

The Trojans and Northfield squared off for the second time this season. The first game ended in a tie on December 7. This time the Raiders got a goal midway through the second period, then added another one in the third for a 2-0 win.

Northfield outshot the Trojans 31-28, with Sletta making 29 saves.

The two teams will play again on January 18, at Northfield.
