Girls to play for share of Missota crown

The Missota Conference girls basketball race enters its final round Friday with four teams tied for first place at 10-3.

Chanhassen, New Prague, Shakopee and Farmington are all tied for the conference lead after New Prague defeated Chanhassen 87-78 Tuesday, Feb 22, in New Prague. (Details on that game will be published in the March 3 edition of The Times. )

New Prague will face Farmington on Friday, Feb. 25, with the winner assured of at least a share of the conference title.

The Trojans will begin Section 1AAA tournament play Wednesday, March 2, against a team to be determined. Seeding will be done Saturday, with New Prague expected to be the No. 1 seed. They will be at home for the first round, with Faribault the most likely first round opponent. Pairings will be posted when they are announced at under Just Posted.

New Prague split a pair of Missota Conference games last week, losing at Shakopee and winning at Red Wing.

Sabers 67, Trojans 57

New Prague trailed by 10 points at halftime against the host Sabers and couldn't get back into the game.

Taylor Rookaird had 21 points for the Trojans and went 7-of-9 from the free throw line in the loss. Maggie Seter had 11 points. Also scoring for the Trojans were Makayla Reimers (8), Anna Rynda (7), Sara Rookaird (6), and Lauren Carr and Annie Dittberner (2 each).

Reimers added seven rebounds and three steals for the Trojans.

Trojans 72, Wingers 64

New Prague built an eight-point lead at halftime and held on for a 72-64 win over Red Wing, all but assuring the Trojans a No. 1 seed in the Section 1AAA playoffs that begin March 2.

New Prague had four players in double figures, and got all of their scoring from their five starters. Taylor Rookaird led the way with 25 points and eight rebounds, along with three assists.

Rynda had a strong game, with 21 points and two steals. She also played tough defense against Red Wing's leading scorer, Tesha Buck, holding her to 11 points.

Reimers added 12 points and seven rebounds, along with three steals and a blocked shot. Seter scored 10 points and had seven assists for the Trojans, while Sara Rookaird had 4 points and seven rebounds, along with two assists and a steal.
