Girls shut out Wingers, fall to Stars in Missota play

The No. 8-ranked New Prague High School girls hockey team registered its second straight shutout with a 7-0 win over Red Wing, then lost to No. 4-ranked Holy Angels 5-2. The team was 7-3 in the conference, 17-4 overall going into Tuesday's game against No. 6-ranked Farmington.

The Trojans' season winds down this week, as they play their final three regular season games. On Thursday, Jan. 20, they play at Northfield. On Tuesday, Jan. 25, they host Prior Lake, and on Thursday, Jan. 27, they host Shakopee in a senior night game.

The Section 1A playoffs begin Tuesday, February 1. New Prague, the defending section champions, appear to be a lock for the No. 1 seed, which would mean a first-round bye. Their second-round game would be played at home on Thursday, Feb. 3.

Trojans 7, Wingers 0

New Prague dominated this game, outshooting the Wingers 40-6 on their way to their second-consecutive 7-0 win.

Jenna Kilpatrick opened the scoring for the Trojans with a goal at 12:31. She finished with one goal and three assists. Jessie Doig had four goals—two of them short-handed—and two assists, while Britty Smith and Kacy Ambroz got the other goals.

Daedra Culshaw played the first two periods in goal and Brittany Sickmann came on in the third. Both made three stops.

Holy Angels opened up fast, scoring twice in the first three minutes of the game, but the Trojans settled down and it was 2-0 after one period.

Doig scored a pair of goals for the Trojans, both on the power play, in the second period. The first came at 7:40, with Kilpatrick getting an assist, the second came at 14:24, with Ambroz and Kilpatrick getting assists.

But the Trojans' newfound momentum lasted all of 23 seconds, as the Stars scored at 14:47, taking a 3-2 lead into the second intermission. Holy Angels scored twice more in the third to take the 5-2 win.

Holy Angels outshot the Trojans 34-22. Culshaw made 29 saves for the Trojans.
