Girls win 2 at Rochester

The New Prague Trojan girls basketball team won a pair of games at the Rochester Rotary Tournament, defeating Anoka and Plainview-Elgin-Millville to win their bracket.

The Trojans (6-5) were scheduled to play Kasson-Mantorville Tuesday, Jan. 3. They will play at Prior Lake Thursday, Jan. 5, then open their Wright County Conference schedule at home Friday, Jan. 6, against Holy Family Catholic.

Trojans 54, Tornadoes 46 New Prague opened the tournament against Anoka and claimed a 54-46 win, outscoring the Tornadoes 8-0 in overtime.

New Prague led most of the contest, but saw an early 10- point lead disappear and trailed by one, 23-22 at halftime.

The Trojans quickly righted their ship and led most of the second half, but the Tornadoes tied it and forced an extra session.

New Prague was cold shooting from the field, making just 13 of 60 shots. But their defense forced 23 Anoka turnovers and the Trojans outscored Anoka 20-6 in points off turnovers. They also had an advantage inside.

Taylor Hustad scored 21 points for the Trojans, with Maizie Deihl adding 11 and Emily Russo 10. Also scoring were Randi Allar (8) and Keegan Mulvihill and Sally Traxler (2 each).

Hustad was 11-of-14 from the free throw line and had seven rebounds and seven steals along with two blocked shots. Russo had nine rebounds and four steals and Deihl had six rebounds.

Trojans 35, Bulldogs 20 New Prague handed Plainview-Elgin-Millville, the No. 2- ranked team in Class AA, its first defeat of the season in impressive fashion, winning 56-43.
