Going public with a private street

By Patrick Fisher, Staff Writer

The New Prague City Council and representatives of the two Village Street SE Homeowners Associations discussed the possibility of turning a private road into a public street. The consensus at the Monday, Nov. 7, council meeting was to continue the discussion at a future meeting.

The homeowners associations are located along Village Street, which is in Prague Estates on the east side of town.

Jackie Frolund of the homeowners associations said they had questions about a list of seven requirements for making the private street into a public road. The requirements were approved at the October 18, 2010, council meeting and then presented to the associations. The list includes doing a survey to determine if the utilities are all located within the existing road right of way and completing minor asphalt repairs.

Frolund said an issue they had was they wanted to know the costs for it up front. It was felt it would be difficult for the associations to complete all those requirements. The homeowners were concerned about the costs so to keep them within reach. Frolund noted that a lot of the residents are retired.
