Grapplers win 6 straight; take 1st at Tartan

The New Prague Trojan wrestling team is riding a six-match winning streak that included three wins at the Tartan Invitational, where they earned championship honors.

The Trojans will return to action Friday, Jan. 28, when they host Farmington and Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton in a triangular. Action starts at 5 p.m. in the Auxiliary Gym at New Prague High School.

Ponies 50, Trojans 21

New Prague lost to Stillwater 50-21 at Chanhassen Thursday, Jan. 21.

The Trojans won the first two matches by fall, with Trevor Westerlund (103) and Griffin Parriott (112) both getting second period wins. Stillwater won the next two matches to cut the Trojan's lead to 12-10, but Morgan Parriott (130) earned a pin in 44 seconds to make it 18-10.

Stillwater won the next three matches to take a 25-18 lead. Luke Ritter (152) took an 8-2 decision for New Prague's final points.

Trojans 49,

StormHawks 21

New Prague upped its Missota conference record to 1-1 with a 41-29 win over Chanhassen/Chaska.

Winning by fall for New Prague were James Berg (119), Morgan Parriott (130), Logan Giles (171), Nathan Preston (189), Jesse Tuma (216) and Brandon Svoboda (285). Also getting wins for the Trojans were Westerlund (103) with a major decision, Dakota Cole (135) with a decision and Alex Mueller (160) with a forfeit.

Morgan Parriot's win was the 100th career win for the sophomore, who is in his fourth year on varsity. He becomes the 14th Trojan to reach that milestone. Travis Rutt is the school's career wins leader.

Giles' win was big because it marked a return to action for the sophomore, who was out since early December with an injury.

Trojans 78, Blaze 6

Burnsville sent out a number of JV wrestlers due to match count issues and they were no match for the Trojans, who won 13 matches, 10 by fall and three by forfeit. Of the 10 wins, only one went into the third period.

Winning by fall were Westerlund (103), Griffin Parriott (112), Richard Reinartz (125), Morgan Parriott (130), Sam Duncan (140), Ritter (152), Mueller (160), Giles (171), Tuma (215) and Svoboda (285). Three Trojans had forfeit wins. They were Bryor McGuiggan (135), Cole (140) and Preston (189).

Trojans 49, Chargers 13

New Prague won the first seven matches to build a 33-0 lead and took 11 of 14 overall in defeating Dassel-Cokato 49-13.

The Trojans did not earn a pin in the match, but benefited from four forfeits. Those wins went to Westerlund (103), Morgan Parriott (130), Alek Nelson (135) and Cody Sirek (171). Earning major decisions were Griffin Parriot (112), Reinartz (125), Cole (140) and Preston (189). Three Trojans got decisions. They were Berg (119), Ritter (152) and Tuma (215).

Tartan Tournament

New Prague won the championship at the Tartan Dual Tournament, winning matches from Blaine, Lakeville South and Grand Rapids.

Trojans 67, Bengals 3

New Prague won 13 of 14 matches and had no problems in defeating Blaine 67-3 in the first round at Tartan.

New Prague had pins from Westerlund (103), Reinartz (125), Morgan Parriott (130), Cole (135), McGuiggan (140), Ritter (152), Mueller (160) and Svoboda (285). Berg (119) posted a major decision, and New Prague got decisions from Griffin Parriott (112), Patrick Zeimet (145) and Tuma (215). Gilles (171) received a forfeit win.

Trojans 39, Cougars 37

New Prague earned a tight semifinal win over Lakeville South, 39-37, to advance to the championship match.

The Trojans jumped to a big lead, winning the first six matches, then won only one match the rest of the way, but it was enough to get the win.

Westerlund opened with a major decision at 103, followed by falls by Griffin Parriott (112) and Berg (119). Reinartz (125) earned a technical fall and Morgan Parriott (130) and Cole (135) both won by fall, making it 33-0.

The Cougars began whittling away at the lead, as they registered two falls and a technical fall to make it 33-17.

Alex Mueller got what proved to be the decisive win with a fall at 160.

South got the next four matches, and went into the final match with a chance to win with a fall, but were only able to get a 6-1 win to make the final 39-37.

Trojans 42, Thunderhawks 29

New Prague took the championship match by once again jumping to a big lead and hanging on.

Winning by fall for New Prague were Westerlund (103), Morgan Parriott (130), Mueller (160) and Svoboda (285). Griffin Parriott (112) and Berg (119) had forfeit wins, while Ritter (152) and Preston (189) earned decisions.
