Group proposes to take over golf club management

By Patrick Fisher, Staff Writer

At its Tuesday, Nov. 23, meeting the New Prague Golf Board recommended the city look at a contract proposal from Wade Brod of Golf Management Enterprises, LLC, to contract out the golf manager's position.

Brod noted this was similar to other programs where public organizations have privatized positions such as school lunch staff or toll roads to help with their budgets. Under his proposal, the manager and possibly other staff for the New Prague Golf Club would be contracted. He estimated under the proposal savings could range from $55,000 for the manager to $120,000 for the golf management staff plus part-time staff. Brod noted he was using numbers from the proposed 2011 budget the golf board had recommended earlier this month.

Under the proposal, the manager would have a $60,000 base contract starting January 1, 2011. The golf management staff would be a $175,000 base contract. Both would be on an annual basis. Brod said it would save money in the golf operations, improve operations and create future opportunities.

Many of the advisors and directors of Golf Management Enterprises have ties to New Prague and the course. They include Scott Proshek, manager of the local golf club for 25 years and currently golf coach at the University of St. Thomas; Mark Swelland, owner of New Prague Auto Group; Dave Shonka, controller for College City Beverages, Inc.; Bill Remmert, who has experience as manager of the Riverside and New Ulm country clubs; Chris Morris, legal counsel; Todd Hill, marketing, First Tee Board Member, government affairs; and Kyle Kuehner and Mike Munyon, the financial and insurance advisors.

Brod noted the team has more than 40 years of experience.

Audience member Pat Scripture asked if this was Brod's first project? He responded he didn't have any others.

I'm excited to see a former member put some effort into this
