Gymnasts place 4th at state

The New Prague Trojan gymnastics team completed their season Friday, Feb. 27, at the State Class A gymnastics meet, which was held for the fist time at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion.

In Thursday's team competition, the Trojans just missed a trip to the awards stand, placing fourth. Perham won its fifth straight state championship with a score of 149.25, followed by Mound-Westonka at 145.3 and Becker at 144.575.

New prague had a team total of 142.175, with Breck/West Lutheran fifth with 141.725, Martin County West sixth with 141.15, Melrose seventh with 140.45 and Pine Island eighth at 138.05

This was New Prague's 10th state tournament appearance in 11 years. Of those 10 trips, the Trojans have finished no lower than fourth. They have won two championships and six second-place finishes during that run.

New Prague began competition on the floor exercise in the team competition. Their top score on the floor came from Ashley Wagner, who had a 9.125. Senior Ashley Morris scored a 9.025 for the Trojans.

New Prague moved on to the vault, where they had their highest team score of the day, at 36.15. Seniors Alysha Gareis and Danielle Busch led the Trojans with a 9.4 and a 9.0 respectively.

New Prague struggled on the uneven bars, with the lone exception being Gareis, who had a 9.475, the third-highest of the day. Jess Hoffman was next for the Trojans with an 8.55.

New Prague also had problems on the balance beam, but Hoffman had a very strong routine, scoring a 9.625, tied for the highest of the day. Coach Matt Shetka said his team looked OK, but seemed a bit off their normal scores.
