A hair-raising experience
In a packed American Legion Club full of community supporters, Mary Miller (seated) shrieked during her head shaving on Sunday at the Kathy Pexa Miller Benefit. Mary, who is Kathy’s sister-in-law, was the winner, or hair loser, of a bucket bet head-shaving contest. Her bucket collected a whopping $719. Breathing a sigh of relief and supporting her during the shave was Kathy’s sister, Cindy Jakes (left) whose bucket came in second with $547.
Mary and Cindy were among the hundreds of people who attended the benefit for Kathy, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 recurring breast cancer last December. Doing the honors of the shaving was Kathy’s daughter Cassie, who had previously shaved her own head in support of her mother.
Mary wasn’t alone with her new chrome dome. Along with Cassie and herself, Kathy’s other daughter Gabbie had also previously shaved her head to support her mom.
The benefit also included a waffle breakfast, silent auction, live auction, t-shirt and cheesecake sales. Donations continue to be accepted at CornerStone State Bank, Frandsen Bank and Trust, and any Wells Fargo Bank location. (Wade Young Photo)
